The Sutro Tunnel was envisioned and carried out by Adolph Sutro, a Prussian immigrant and entrepreneur. Sutro proposed to build a drainage adit that would efficiently drain the water from the Comstock Mines, reduce transportation costs, ventilate the mines and protect the miners lives. The tunnel runs 3.88 miles long from Dayton to Virginia City.
